KATY, Texas — The Katy Independent School District, one of the country’s fastest growing school systems, has hired Commercial Window Shield for Phase 2 of a safety and security window film installation project.

The company will install 15-mil safety and security film with a Dow 995 wet glaze attachment system to the doors and windows in the main entrance vestibules of 17 school buildings. The film secures the glass, thwarting entrance from potential violent intruders.

Previously, in Phase 1 in 2016, Commercial Window Shield installed the same film in 55 Katy school buildings. Katy, located in suburban Houston, was struck by serious flooding during Hurricane Harvey last August, delaying Phase 2. The school district is adding nearly 5,000 students a year and is up to more than 75,000, placing it in the top 50 in the country.

Commercial Window Shield was the lowest and most experienced of five bidders on the project’s initial phase. For Phase 2, Katy executed a previously agreed upon option in the original contract to retain Commercial Window Shield. Funding for the project is part of a $748 million bond approved by voters in 2014. The Phase 2 project will begin later this month.

With school intrusions and shootings escalating, the Katy project continues a national trend in which school districts are acting to protect their buildings from potential violent intruders with the installation of safety and security window film. The film, with shatter resistant qualities, helps keep unwanted intruders from entering school buildings through first-floor windows and entryways, giving police precious time to respond to potential threats.

Commercial Window Shield has received widespread praise for its security film installation work at schools.

Salee, construction manager for a security film project at Rockwell [Texas] Independent School District in suburban Dallas. “They worked very efficiently, went out of their way to avoid any distractions for the building occupants, and completed the project in less time than had been anticipated. We are very pleased with the quality of the workmanship of the installation.”

Since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in 2012, Commercial Window Shield has been at the forefront of protecting glass in school buildings nationwide. To date, the company has installed security window film on more than 300 buildings in nine states.
